Why Is The Basement Floor Drain Backing Up?

September 21, 2022

1.Main Sewer Clogged

Accumulation of grease. Grease is insoluble in water and not sticky, so it doesn't run well through drains. Over time, grease can adhere to the inside of the main sewer, slowly building up and clogging the pipes. To prevent this from happening, avoid pouring large amounts of grease down the drain. We can pour boiling water down the drain once a month to remove grease that has built up on the pipes.

rust. Older homes with galvanized drain pipes tend to rust over time. Rust can grow inside the pipe and eventually clog it. While there are some temporary ways to repair rusted pipe, it will eventually need to be replaced with PVC. This is best left to the professionals.

Improperly rinsed items. Paper towels, wads of toilet paper, cotton swabs, and a slew of other materials that can flush down the toilet can get stuck in the main drain, causing blockages. Develop good flushing habits.

Debris, hair and dirt. Humans shed 50 to 100 hairs a day, most of which occurs in the shower. This means a lot of hair can end up in the drains of your home. While shorter hairs may pass easily, longer hairs can become tangled with other dirt and debris passing through the main drain, causing blockages. Consider installing a drain cover in the shower, which will catch hair before it enters your home's main drain.

2.Sewer Damage

Sometimes, clogs have nothing to do with drain backflow. This can happen in the following situations:

Sewers have cracks or holes.

Sewer pipes bulge, sag or collapse.

Roots are misplaced or seep into drains.

In all of these cases, the sewer becomes clogged, which forces waste water back into the home. Sewer damage may require more work to repair.
